tie rod end
Hello everybody,
My wife's 1993 940 makes noise when turning left, especially down a slight incline.
I jacked up the front end and turned the wheels hard left. When I pulled on the left wheel (out direction, that is left), I noticed some play. Is this the tie rod end, or could it also be the inner tie rod?
Thanks.

could be a lot of things. I'm tackling the same thing on my 240 right now. Without knowing the exact parts of a 940 I can't give you specifics, but with mine I had loose hubs, loose lower ball joints and bad bushings in the control arm.
I wouldn't think the tire rods would be your culprit on play in your steering....bad alignment maybe but, there are parts that should go bad before the tire rods......

Went for a closer look. Looks like it's the inner tie rods on both sides, because there's play when I push in on the inner rods. The Bentley and Haynes manuals give procedures for removing the whole steering gear, rather than just the inner tie rods.
Can you just replace the inner tie rods without taking the whole steering gear off? And, is this just an inner tie rod problem, or do I have to replace the whole steering gear?
Thanks.
