tie rod replacement on an 82

Usually, what I do is find which brand has the best option (Moog has served me well thus far). Then I do a quick search on ebay for that brand. Sometimes you get lucky. Otherwise, Rockauto.com has been a great source for parts for me lately.
It's not a hard DIY in so much as the parts are pretty straight forward. The knuckle buster comes from older parts being seized up and very difficult to mange. From my own experience, I found myself wishing I had just done both inner and outter tie rods at the same time...but, do what you will.
in a nut shell For the outer ends you'll want (though not necessarily need) a tie rod end separator..A.K.A. pickle fork. What you do is loosen the tightening nut off the rod end, loosen the top nut from the ball end and then use the pickle fork to separate the end from the hub assembly. Refitting is the opposite. There are torque specs for the top not...don't recall what they are off the top of my head.
If you get froggy enough to tackle the inner at the same time you'll need to first determine which steering rack you have.
inner rods for the Cam rack replacement will look like this: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Imag...s/rack_cam.gif
inner rods for the ZF rack replacement will look like this: http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Imag...es/rack_zf.gif
easy identification can be made by observing the hole in the bioot that the inner rod protrudes from
A pipe wrench is very handy for this job because you need to ensure you DO NOT twist or put pressure on the steering rack...you'll wreck the gear.
In either case, be sure to count the threads the old parts have been tightened too. You'll need to get an alignment regardless but at least get the new parts relatively close for the drive to the shop.

right on....give it hell!
I can't imagine the shop price being too bad. It really is a fairly straight forward deal on a 240. The guys at my local shop always tell me that if I want them to do it to bring in my own parts. For example, they would have charged me $80 for my inner tie rods and I was able to pick up a better brand for $22 a piece. Same went for my outer ends.
lol, they like me at that shop...I do all the work, all they gotta do is align the damn thing! lol.
