Finally gave up. Couldn't figure out alignment angles. Just used old tensioner roller. That works. Put everything back together and it runs.

I have the same problem. I have bent two idler brackets. As the center bolt holds the wheel snug to the block the bent bracket is esp. odd - twice.

are these idle brackets volvo brand, or 3rd party ?

We had the same thing happen--the timing belt would immediately work itself to the outer edge of the cogged pulleys and would have come off I think if the crank hub was not there to stop it. We don't know the history except that the car came to us not running and supposedly the belt had broken. We replaced the exhaust cam hydraulic pulley, which leaked anyway, all the tensioners and water pump with no improvement. We finally had our machinist tech use a threaded hole in the block under the triangular idler to install a stub threaded stud with a slot in it so he could adjust the angle of that idler and he got the belt to run true--something about that idler I think was faulty--and not just the one we put in. The one that was on the car when we got it did the same thing too. It seems there are some weird idlers out there.
