Default Towing 940 wagon

Hello everyone,

I will be driving down to pick up my dad. We will be driving a U-Haul truck back and towing the 940 with rear wheels on the ground. I will be disconnecting the drive shaft, having never done this on the Volvo.

I've read the various threads here and am getting mixed messages. My question. All I need to do is remove the four nuts/bolts at the rear of the shaft and then rig something to secure that end of the shaft from falling? The shaft will simply fall out of position? Or do I need to pull it forward? And will differential oil come out such that I need to plug the hole somehow?

I'm doing this hundreds of miles from my garage, and want to be sure all needed tools are wil me. Thanks go out to anyone with advice.

That's it--you don't have to worry about leaks, just secure the shaft so it doesn't bang around or just remove it completely. Make sure you mark its position if you separate it since the halves are balanced.

Yes undo 4 bolts and the flange should come loose, maybe with a little persuasion from light hammer taps or a pry bar (It's probably been on there a while). No differential oil will leak. The back half of the drive shaft has a sliding spline at the front - you can easily pry the dust boot off and slide that section out. Be sure to clearly mark exactly how the rear part was aligned/installed or you will have vibrations if you don't put it back exactly. If you can find a way to tie it up securely maybe to the exhaust - that might be easier - I trust you are taking metric wrenches

Ok, thanks for the peace of mind. I have the 15mm and 17mm spanners and a bag of various bungee cords already on board. I'll add a dead blow mallet and a crow bar. I've already sprayed the nuts/bolts with PBblaster and loosened/tightened one just for practice.

I'll add a bottle of white nail polish for marking the connection points.

Again, thanks!
