Transmission solvent flush and change success!
Hi All,
This worked so well I had to share it.
I am on the second transmission for my 740GL (3sp w/OD). The first one had a bad torque converter, so I got a transmission with a warranty ($700.00 1/yr).
It shifted hard from 1st to 2nd, as if it had a worn ball valve. I changed the fluid (per the instructions on the 740 FAQ), used Trans Tune, Lucas, etc. Eventually it failed. Got a new transmission shipped per the warranty.
That one shifted hard as well. Decided it was worth trying something.
I drained enough fluid to get a full bottle of Trans Tune in it. Jacked it up, removed the rear wheels, and ran it through all the gears about 100 times, with some throttle.
Replace the fluid per the FAQ, also had my assistant put it in reverse and to flush out the torque converter.
I think I used about 4 gallons of fluid (that still didn't get it to run out clear, new fluid, but close).
Brick is now shifting baby-butt smooth in all gears. Should be good for about 150k miles from here.
What a relief!

I recommend getting a hose attached to the top of the radiator instead of jacking it up.
