Default Turbo Seal

Hey all, after I replaced the A/C compressor, I noticed that there is a leak coming from the turbo after looking at the air intake and saw that it has a light coating of oil on it. Then I saw white smoke coming from the turbo area and the back of the tail pipe. There is no strange noise coming from the turbo, so I know that the turbo works fine. I know that it will be a pain in the neck to get to the turbo, so I decided to get it fixedby a professional. Does anyone have a cost estimate of someone replacing the turbo seal?

Anybody know the specs on the on the turbo? Found one online that might fit my car and need to know if it fits. I got the specs on the turbo that I found and here it is:

100% brand new
Capable of boosting horse power up to 300+ BHP
High quality material, cast housing with durable steel
4 bolt exhaust flange
Standard T3 5 bolt downpipe flange pattern
Intake inlet & outlet: 3" & 2"

Compressor:Trim: 55
A/R: .5
Inducer: 50.5
Exducer: 76

Turbine:Trim: 73
A/R: .63
Inducer: 65.5
Exducer: 55.9

Really need to know if it is compatable with my car.

Ok, have found turbo chargers for less what the dealership wanted ($1200 just for the turbo). Found new turbos online for about $650-$750 plus tax and shipping. The only thing that is holding me back is where can I find the manufacturers label on the turbo on the car. The turbo is made by either Garrett or Mitsubishi.

I hate to see one-way conversations here and like to help out the most I can. Unfortunately I don't have any turbo experience.

Have you checked out TurboBricks | High Performance Volvo Club You should be able to might be able find your answers there.

Good luck.

pretty sure a 91 740T has a mitsubishi td04h, but not all td04 are automatically a bolt in, you want one specific for a volvo 740/940.

For a 1971 740T, the turbo was volvo PN 3517646, which has been superceded by the 'exchange' PN of 5003713 which is $711 plus a $250 core charge at Tascaparts.com.

that would be a FACTORY rebuilt turbo. you can find aftermarket rebuilt ones for *maybe* $100 cheaper. caveat emptor.

I second the Mitsubishi TD04H. I've seen a 92 with a Garrett, but I think that it may have been swapped from an older car. Volvo's turbos have an internal wastegate and a funny gasketless flange. I think the TD05 on my car interchanges as well. It's a little bigger. Volvo went to a smaller turbo for quicker spool up. I'd just get on specific to your car.

as I understand it, the garretts had a little more top end power but with more lag, while the mitsus have faster spoolup giving you better low end torque.

Well, I did find out a while ago that my turbo is a Mitsubishi and all I need to do is order one and put it in. That is when I'm not at work or helping my brother work on his car (which doesn't run).

Before dropping a boat load of money on such a tiny turbo, consider having your existing turbo rebuilt. Doing it yourself is about $120 in parts or you can have it sent off for a bit more. I get my parts from G-Pop Shop They are extremely helpful by email.
