850 Turbo Rear Main Seal
Well, It's time to face the music. The 1994 850 Turbo is leaking oil to the tune of 1 quart a day out the rear main seal. I had the car all apart about 2 weeks ago to replace the Cam Position and Crank Sensors. While in there I rebuilt the turbo and replaced all the Coolant hoses. I also cleaned out the PCV Oil trap etc.
Now the oil is definately coming between the engine and tranny. I have a couple of questions.
1: How HIGH to I need to jack the car to comfortably remove the subframe and Tranny??
2: Is this something that I can do in my driveway without having a mental breakdown or heart attack from frustration? (I am an accomplished "Shadetree" mechanic) I have done the same type of jobs on a Volkswagen a few times)
3: Anyone have any pictures or suggested info on how to accomplish this task?
4: What other things should I replace while I am doing this.
I think that I will replace the suspension bits that are worn currently (Tie Rod ends, Struts, Lower ball joints, Sway bar end links)
Also, oil thermostat Oring, lower sump O rings, Timing Belt
Should I consider replacing the oil pump? Water Pump?
Car has 130K miles and at some point prior to my getting it had a couple years of neglect.
Any Help would be appreciated.

It can be pulled from the top. Or you can leave the tranny in the car and pull the motor. Or it could also come out the bottom.
It would be what ever way you decided to do. You would have to have a tall set of jackstands to be able to drop just the tranny out the bottom.

Tech,
If you get a chance can you point me in the direction of how to remove engine and tranny as a unit with a hoist up through the engine bay? This sounds like my best option, I have been meaning to purchase an engine hoist anyways since I have lots of other uses. (68' Camaro, 97 VW Jetta, Side Jobs for [sm=partyparty.gif][sm=icon_cheers.gif]Money Etc etc.
To make it easy on you I assume I would start with removing all the intake tract, hoses, drain coolant, remove all the wiring connectors etc. I am more in need of what mounts to disconnect and in what order and where a good points to hook it from.

Yes that is a good place to start. There is 3 engine mounts and 2 torque mounts that need to come loose. With the electronic cooling fan out I have loosened the A/C compressor and left it in the car. I also did that with the power steering pump as well. But you can do that as you want to. If you take some time and watch over what you are doing it won't be all that bad. Also don't forget the Axles.
