Default upper strut mount worst case scenario?

so the rubber on my upper strut mounts on my 83 245 is cracked almost all the way through. it has been getting progressively worse over the past year. my steering binds a bit under parking lot turns. i know the the mounts need to be replaced.
say they failed what am I in for??
because im broke and its gonna be a couple weeks

the strut could punch through your hood.

if they fail catastrophically while you're at speed, you could crash. under the wrong circumstances, this could be fatal to you or someone else.

is the rubber i see from the top side just a cover? i had someone turn my wheel while someone else pushed the car up and down and they dont seem as bad as i thought
there was a but of noise on the right but not like a thought
but the rubber i see on top is cracked through

the rubber is a bushing to absorb vibration. the mcpherson strut rode is bolted through the rubber and the rubber is mounted to the plate thats bolted to the strut tower.

so if the rubber has failed that doesnt necessarily mean the strut has failed
