Volve 740 auto transmission reverse selection
I have an internmitent problem selecting reverse 0n my Volvo 740 auto. Sometimes I need to move the transmission lever to drive and then back to reverse before reverse will select. Can anybody advise why this might occur and what the remedy is?
Thanks

Further to this, I had similar problems with my 90 740. There is so much play in the shifter linkages under the car that it can be hard to feel it's in gear.
The selector mechanism has a detent built in and the valve the shifter actuates also has a detent built in. So if you get enough play, you can have the shifter in say D and trans will be in N or JUST hanging into D.
What you need is the shift bush kit, which I mistakenly said could be bought from IPD, it is an FCP Groton product:

I'd also recommend ordering a transmission bushing if your car has serious mileage as they're always flogged out.
Replacement is straightforward, raise car up on front stands or ramps and pull the linkages apart on left side of transmission. It's pretty obvious when you get down in there with a light, it can be fiddly and for sure it'll all be a dirty, greasy mess, but it's an easy enough job. I won't go into further detail as it really is that straightforward.
Once you have it all done, be sure and set the linkage up as per a workshop manual, again, easy enough to do.
Both these simple jobs will radically improve your Volvo's feel, nice slick shifter and less vibes and banging from the transmission resting on the crossmember.
Regards, Andrew.

Volvo 740 transmission bushing.
Andrew,
Thanks for your help. Is the additional transmission bushing you recommended in your latest thread this one? http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exe...Aftermarket%29. If its not this one are you able to send me a link?
I dont have a manual or parts list so will have to get one so I know what you are talking about! Also the car is on its way from my parents to my daughter so dont have a car to crawl under to have a look at the moment.
Cheers
Phil
