Default Volvo 240 wagon full size spare?

As I was cleaning out the back of my 1990 Volvo 240 Wagon on Saturday, I took the time ot get a better look at my spare tire. It is one of those temporary tires with SPARE in the center tread. While this spare looks like it was never used, the thing is still at least 22 years old(at least until tomorrow and then it will be 23 years old ) and i was thinking about replacing the spare with a full size regular tire. The tires on my car are 14in tires and i can snag a steel Volvo 240 rim from the local junk yard for cheap and get a cheapy new 14in tire for the rim.

My question is, can a full size tire fit in the spare tire well on the 240 wagons? I don't know how the 240 sedans are but in the wagon the spare is located in the drivers side of the cargo hold.

Anybody have a full size tire in their 240 wagon?

Thanks

Take one of your tires off and toss it back there to check. It should fit.

It will fit...but there may be an issue securing it with the factory hardware.

we have a 240 sedan and a full sized spare JUST fits, its a little tight with the 185/70-14.

it *looks* like if you didn't have the US style evaporative recovery crap on the fuel filler pipe, you'd be able to stow TWO full sized spares in the sedan, one on each side.

Sorry for the delay in replying

Thanks for the replies, I will test this out with one of the wagons in the junk yard. The testing it with one of the tires is a good idea however really cold weather like there is in my area + the fact everytime I try to screw with something on a car in the cold I break crap and knowing my luck I will snap a lug nut off so if I try it at the JY then no harm done.

I can find ways to secure it in the hole. I have two of those stretchy tire holders(don't know why the past owner had two but whatever.

Thanks again

Securing the tire? For what? I do put the strap over mine but really don't see the point.

Yes, a full size tire/wheel fits nicely in the driver's side rear compartment.

I saw a guy pulled over by the cops with 4 of those silly spares on his car.
yea 25 year old tires arent safe. ive had a couple where the whole sidewall shredded right around and it was really dangerous.
i like to keep a snow tire in there. if i get stuck i can put it on the side that spins.
