Default Steel full size spare OK with Alloy Wheels?

Have a 95 940 turbo wagon with stock alloy wheels. Want a full size spare. Would a steel wheel from a 94 940 sedan be OK to use as a spare if I put the same size tire on it? Thanks

sure. doesn't even need to be the same size tire as long as its the same outer diameter... for instance, you could use a 15" steel wheel with 185/65-15 or 195/60-15 even tho your wheels are 16" with 205/55-16 as all of these are very close to the same outer diameter. The tire also should have a similar load factor.

Pierce's advice is correct. The one thing to be aware of, and Pierce knows 940's better than me, is if a smaller wheel will fit over the brake caliper. Chances are it will, but if you are getting a smaller steel wheel, you might want to check the fit before buying it.

I'm assuming the rim in question is a volvo 740/940 6x15" steel rim. those will fit fine. 16" rims were optional on these cars, few late 940's have them.

you /probably/ could use a 240 14" steel wheel with (not sure the exact tire size, maybe 185/70-14?) but it would only fit on the back, so if you had a front flat, you'd have to swap the spare to the rear, then the rear to the front.

with modern tires kept in good conditions, flats are pretty darn rare, unless you run around on desert dirt roads and slash your sidewalls. In the last 10 years, between my wife and I and numerous cars and 200K+ miles of driving, I think we've had one flat, my wife, and she fixed that one with her AAA card

ok, we had another flat in 2001, on her former Volvo S90, the sidewalls got slashed going down Titus Canyon in death valley (a 4x4-only road, hah hah). it didn't actually fail til 3-4 days later, going home. i was following her in a van we'd just bought (thats how I remember the year), so I was able to fix it in the center divider of the freeway for her.
