Default Volvo 740 '90 Wagon parts on a 740 '91

Hello all! I just bought a Volvo 740 '91 non turbo and I need to get some new parts for it. I found a donor car that I think someone'll let me use to steal parts from, however it's the wagon version of the car. How much of the parts from the wagon edition will fit on the non-wagon edition? I'm looking to get these parts:
  • Top Crossmember/radiator mounts
  • Headlights and Taillights
  • Bumper
  • Grill
  • Hood
  • Left and Right Sidepanels (according to the volvo parts diagram)
  • Instrument Cluster

What other things should I try scrounging from the car that would be useful for future repairs as well?

The taillights look to be the only parts you need that are non-interchange between sedan and estate variants of the 740, depending on what you mean by side panels. If you mean fenders then yes, they're interchange parts, but quarter panels wouldn't be. Any of the other parts should be interchangeable, assuming that the trim levels are the same or compatible. I know Volvo messed around with the radiators on the 940 sometime between 90 and 93, but I'm not sure about the 740. Some mild sluthing on one of the Volvo forums should set you straight regarding the rad though.

92+ 740 and 940 turbos at least, got new larger radiators so the crossmember things are all different.

as British_Atlantic says, all the front end external stuff is compatible with 91 and newer 740 and 940, as long as they are the same style headlights. most 940's got headlights with fog lamps, and these have a different hood, different grill, different trim, different front turn signals and fenders. 740's before 91 had different front end parts (and in fact, 1990 was a one-year only, up to 89 they were entirely different)

you can get new 740 91/92 style headlights fairly inexpensively on ebay from Depo, these work quite well, I had them on my 92 740 turbowagon. they sure beat 30 year old yellowed hazy headlights!

rear end, 740 sedan is unique, but 740 wagon is compatible with 91+ 940 wagons, except the bumper trim was a slightly different style.

by side panel, do you mean the rear fenders/quarter panels? those sorts of parts, body shops get aftermarket sheet metal skins and cut away the bad metal and weld the new panels onto the car

frankly, if a 91 non-turbo 740 sedan needs that much body work, find another one, its cheaper.

my former 1992 740 T wagon...

Got it for 250$, engine still seems to run pretty fine and the interior is nice. Just had some front end damage my friend and I are hoping to fix up, someone's letting us take a bunch of parts from their scrapper for 200$ so that's where we're getting our parts from.

does it drive straight ? no shudder or pull when you brake hard? If its been in a crash, there's a possibility the front end got tweaked.

an old car is probably $1000/year in random maintenance and repairs for the first 3-5 years til you get everything sorted. I'd rather start with a clean straight exterior *and* interior. that front end? those radiator cross member and the headlight mounting brackets? A lot of that stuff is all spot-welded in.

oh, 'side panels', do you mean the panels behind the headlights? like these (this is a 240) ? on the 240 and the 7/9, the front fenders are bolted on, but the inner fenders and the cross bar and the headlight panels, and the lower cross piece, that stuff is all spot welded then fill and paint.

a body shop can probably straighten those easier than they can take it all apart and replace the sheet metal pieces.

here's that same 240 6 years later post-repairs...

I need the fender, but also as @pierce pointed out, the "side panels" are the panels around the headlights. We're going to either try to straighten them out ourselves in place or removed (with a spot weld removal bit) or get new pieces and weld them in. As for any weird alignment issues when driving/braking? None that I've noticed in driving it ~30 miles so far.

Funny story: Hood flew open since we didn't know it wasn't locked down all the way (broken) while driving at ~15mph. Scared the **** out of me, and my friend who was escorting me, nearly laughed his pants off.

wait, you mean the "L" shaped trim pieces around the headlights? or the panels in back that the headlights are mounted on ?

the trim panels were Volvo PN 3536530 and 3536531, no idea if those are still available. ok, right is, left isn't? oh goodie.

1991 740 had two radiator grills, 3518884 (chromed) and 3528745 (anthracite grey). these do not include the slash or volvo logos, thats a bunch more PNs. anyways, both are unobtanium from the dealer, but there's lots of ebay NOS

AFAIK, those parts are pretty much 1991/92 740 only. you probably COULD use 940 parts but you'd need to swap the hood, grill, fenders, headlights, fogs, front parking lights, and get the 2-way foglamp switch out of the 940 too (your 740 is probably wired for fogs, my 92 was, just had to swap the switch and it was plug and play to wire aftermarket fogs).

this is a 940 with the 'turbo' grill, they also came with a chrome grill.

The pieces I'm needing are 3526699, 3526700, and 1355637. They look to be all spot welded in which is going to be a pain in the ****. Speaking of which -- are there any good reference photos of what the car looks like without the headlights? It'd be nice to get some photos of what the front end looks like without any damage...

Not so. The 940 came with two front ends, one is identical to the 91-92 740 (no fogs), the other is the one with the fog lights, basically four front lights which have different grilles, corner lights and headlights, all other parts will swap to the 740 of 1991-92, they are IDENTICAL. The 1990 740 has a few front pieces different, the grill and the pieces between the radiator and the lights.

The "L" shaped pieces are used on the non fog light models only, 740 or 940.

are the fenders and hood compatible between the versions? i thought they differed ? For sure, a 91 940SE (really a 960 turbo), and the 960s in general have a completely different aluminum hood thats not compatible with the 740/940 at all due to the 960's having a recessed cowl and different hood hinges.

you're right, now that I think back, I have seen a /few/ late model 940's with the simple no-fog headlights... the first few years (91/92/93) they pretty much all had the fancier 'fog' headlights while the 91/92 740s had the base version. around here, at least, nearly all 940's were the GLE or turbo models and came pretty loaded.

anyways, for your headlights and front parking lights, you could do (a lot) worse than these...

those are aftermarket, but look like the decent sort of aftermarket clones of OE that work quite well. I think I had Valeos on my 92 740T. Life is way too short for yellow faded headlights.

for your grilll, for sure you'll need to find a used grill from a 91-92 740 *or* a 91-95 940 non-fog configuration. pick-n-pull, local craigslist cars-being-parted-out, etc.

I don't know how this conversation got steered towards 940's since I'm talking about putting 740 '90 wagon parts on a 740 '91 non wagon... I'm going take parts off the wagon today, are there any good spare parts I should also take in addition to what I need?

yeah, 90 front end parts won't fit on a 91-92 740. 1990 was a 1 year only transitional version.

but wait, if you're replacing the whole front face, maybe the 1990 stuff /will/ fit, .. you'll end up with a bastard car.

1990 will fit the 91-95 740, 940 and vice versa. The minor front differences are not an issue if the major pieces are also replaced--the 'chasis' is the same.

I will buy the hood from that car if you tell me the cost & freight billing. Thanks.
