Help. I have a 1990 volvo 740 with a dead transmission. Id plate reads 03-70L.. I called savage yard the said yes we have one from a 1990 740. I get home with it and their tag says aw70L but id plate says 03-71 Can i install this in my car with no problems or should i get one that has late id 03-70L.

You have no turbo right? They use the AW-70L. So it will work.

Wait for others to clarify.....

I see guys who swap tranys all the time on other sites, So I dont see why it wouldn't work. I believe most of the RWD trans (AW-55,56,70,71 etc.) should work with most of the motors (B230, B23, B21 etc.). You can what for others to clarify....

My understanding is that teh difference between an AW70 and AW71 is the AW70 has a lock up torque convertor. Otherwise the same trans.
All it means is your top gear cruise wil be a couple of hundred rpm higher, which is probably not a bad thing for torque and acceleration in top gear.

Regards, Andrew.

It turns out the transmission from the salvage yard in town was a aw71 I needed a aw70L. I was told The trans from salvage yard had only 109,000 miles but really had 288,000 I checked the vin on carfax. So today went to milwaukee Pinkey's Capital city auto got a 1991 aw70L With 119,000 miles for 250. Will put in over weekend, Going to do rear engine seal and housing gasket at same time seeing engine has 202,000 miles. I got front trans seal rear trans seal, pan gasket trans filter and filter gasket. 16 quarts of trans fluid also. Was going to flush system before pulling out old transmission. It had metal in it. Am I forgetting anything? I have never attempted anything like this.
Thanks, Bill

The new used transmission works great. The rear engine seal was not leaking so did not replace. Also the transmission I put in only had 119,000. miles. I did not have the time to change pan gasket or filter and filter gasket in transmission. I figure a good summer project. Needed a running car asap. I think it will be ok. Transmsiion shifts great. Big job but big satisfaction. Hats off to father in law could not have done it without his help.
