Default Volvo 87 240 over heating

My 240 I recently bought overheated and boiled over. I replaced the bottom radiator hose a little earlier (it had a leak). When I filled it back up it was running higher than normal. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Como

Check and maybe even replace the thermostat if it is old.

a coolant flush might also be in order to remove any junk floating around possibly causing a blockage.

These 240's can take a beating and keep going. I made a monumental mistake last week with my 240. My alternator went bad and I pulled it off and cut the belt off - was going to get a new belt too as the old one was bad- and drove to the parts store to get a new alternator and belt ( I didn't have any other way to get there). I left the car running at the parts store because I didn't want to shut it off with no alternator because the battery probably couldn't restart it. Well you are probably already thinking I was stupid. Yes I was, by removing the alternator the water pump will no longer be operational! I drove to the parts store 4 miles away and let the car idle outside the parts store for 10 minutes with no water pump! I happened to look outside and saw steam billowing from under the hood and antifreeze pouring out underneath. I had to then repair the car in the parking lot (I keep a set of tools in the trunk) which was not fun and embarrassing. Anyway I was worried the head gasket might be blown or something bad like that.

After I installed the alternator and filled up the antifreeze, it started right up and no problems. These cars are tough!

Had a problem with my 1985 240 DL overheating. Changed water pump. Checked for coolant level. All was OK. It had seemed fine, coolant flowed AROUND but not THROUGH the Radiator/Engine. Turned out the Radiator wasn't good. Replaced. Ok now.
