Hey there everyone!

I'm having ... "problems" with my 1991 Volvo 740 Estate. I was told by my father that it was only a 3-speed.. which didn't really make make sence, as i thought i felt more shifts. After further research, I found that the 740 only came in a 4 speed maual/auto or a 5 speed manual. I then figured that my transmission must be a 4 speed.

So 1991 Volvo 740 Estate - 4 Speed.

Now at hightway speeds (100k) it seems that my engine is running at around 3000rmp. If i go any higher than this, it only increases the rpms, and no shift is acomplised. I am absolutely sure I am in the final gear when i hit 100k... so why am I getting such poor preformance? Is there any suggestions as to what could be causing this?

 

Sounds like your overdrive is not engaging. Exactly how fast are you going when you reach 3000 RPM?

 

I think volvo only made a three speed auto with overdrive. Your overdrive may not be working so listen carefully for three shifts,(1-2, 2-3, 3-overdrive).

 

Most common problem is Overdrive relay. It is probably bad. On 91, 940 it is located behind an ashtray. It is a white (off white) color housing relay. I fixed mine by resoldering the internal connections. The new one runs between $35 and $55, if I am not mistaken.
The second most common problem is an overdrive solenoid.
Anything else will be trany related problems.

 

I'm Having the same problem I have a 1990 740 *** well. i'm @ 100 or 90 and the rpm's are on 3,000 to 3,300 and if I hit it increases the rpm and no shift it goes directly to 5,000 rpm no shifting, My transmision has only one year from new I put a complete master kit on it clutches everything since I repair it it does that first i doesn't want to shift to 4th gear took to the mechanic and he did something to the transmision that it always is changin to 4th gear he mentioned something about opening the valve that control something todo with transmision fluid that opens to shift to 4th.

Any help would appreciate it on what to do
