want to replace door speakers
on my 240 1989 volvo i want to replace the door speakers(front). I noticed the original ones are revited on. If I replaced those speakers, would I have to take the door panel off, or could I just drill out the revited ones and drill in the new speakers?
as with most things Volvo, the speakers do not lend themselves to an easy modern US retrofit in both impedance and dimension. Be careful about how deep they go and the mounting holes and cover usually needs a mod. All this is far easier on a bench than in the door.
Really? Wow...I didn't realize that. Well, why I am on the subject I also plan on buying a pair of 6x9 for the rear dash, cutting out the holes in the deck and packing, and fitting in the speakers. I in the trunk in the metal frame there are two holes on each side of the car that look like they could hold 6x9 speakers. Am I correct that they can?
At least on the older ones (mine was 1979) they used 4" speakers in the doors. You should be able to drill the rivets out -- worst that could happen, they fall back into your doors. Also, IIRC, mine came set up for 6X9's in the back, and my 1991 780 had 6X9's. In the 240 I put some plate speakers in -- a 5.25" and a tweeter mounted in a plastic plate, and had plenty of clearance. But I think the cutouts were designed for 6X9's.
