wanting to buy 940 turbo
Hello again,
I've been searching for a 940 turbo, latest year and lowest mileage possible. And I'd like to get cloth seats. I've seen them in the non turbos but not in the turbos. Did they ever make such an animal?
Thanks for your replys

in the USA at least, Turbos tended to be fairly loaded, based on the GLE trim level. even my 1992 740T, where that year the 740 was a 'stripper' compared with the 940T, mine came with sunroof, leather seats, seat heaters.
however, in 1994, 1995, ALL 940's were turbocharged even if they didn't say so on the back. the ones that SAY Turbo are GLT trim level, while the others are a more basic GL trim level (note the trim level is NOT indicated on the badging on those later years).
seats are interchangable between ALL 740/940/760/960 vehicles, at most you'd need to fudge up a wiring adapter for seat heaters and/or power seats (these connectors changed some year to year...). I have the (leather) seats from a late 960 in my 92 740T wagon. the seats are bolted to the floor with 4 bolts, and the seat belt fasteners are bolted to the sides of the seat frames, the trim is interchangeable.

Oh..interesting, thanks, that explains a lot about all the different combinations I've seen. I'm guessing that the GLT trim had leather as standard? If so, then I need to look for a 94-95 in GL trim. I particularly like a dark, houndstooth material that looks like charcoal but I think it's referred to as black, and I've only seen it in red cars. Would love to find it in a white car. Any ideas on where to find Volvo interior codes so I can scour the junk yards?
With my Mercedes of the same vintage, you can plug the VIN into their Electronics Parts Catalog, and get a complete bill of materials for that specific car, all its options, paint code, interior code, trim codes, and every option on the car. I've never seen anything like this for Volvo.
Europe got these cars with DL level interiors, hand cranked windows, optional hand cranked sunroof, manual mirrors, etc. Same with Mercedes, here we got a 300E loaded with leather power seats, climate control, burl dashboard trim, nice stereo, alloy wheels, etc. Europe? you could get the same car as a 200E or 230E with a 2L or 2.3L 4 cyl, stick shift, hand cranked windows, cloth seats, no A/C, steel wheels, etc.
Well, a little confusing at times. I guess my US options would be to find a late GLT in the color I want and swap a used interior if I can find one. Just a quick side question, Did any 940s have the independent rear end?
no. IRS was a 960 feature, and wagons were still live axle until the 'facelift' 960 aka V90 that came out in 94 or 95. The facelift IRS cars have a very limited availability of shocks (Monroe, period), and virtually no suspension upgrades/enhancements possible, the rear springs were a transverse fiberglass leaf spring.
the 960's have a wonderfully smooth but very expensive to repair inline 6 cyl that was co-designed by Porsche. The only way get an IRS 4 cyl was a later year turbo 760 sedan, or the one-year-only 940SE which was effectively a turbo I4 960, and I've only seen 940SE wagons (which are live axle not IRS).

Not all 1994 and 1995 are Turbo; there were N/A also. But the "turbo" badge was dropped for those years, as the turbo gauge was dropped for 1995. Cloth seats are available in both the turbos and N/A, just like a sunroof, heated seats (winter package), etc. This is for the US market. The lucky ones overseas got 940 through 1998 available with manual transmissions, diesel engines, and different gas options. The US market gets 10-20% of the choices Europe gets.
