Weber carb conversion to 1982 fi 244
Is it a worthwhile conversion to ditch the EFI and swap over to a carb for my 1982 b230? I realize that I will need to remove my HP pump; will it affect the ignition (Chrysler distributor) system? What about trouble codes in the gauges?
its been done before - just search for some older posts. Is it worthwhile? Really depends why you don't think the exising FI can be fixed. As to ignition and trouble codes - AFAIK there's no tie in between the ignition and the FI and you don't have a check engine light to display fault codes. The only thing you many have is a service interval reminder light or a boost pressure fault indicator (turbos only)
Just looking for insight at this time; I work in the big truck industry and obsolescent parts are becoming a real PITA for us. Manufacturers are dropping old technology left and right trying to stay even with "progress". ECM's are a finite resource.
ECMs are not a common point of failure. The reason new car manufacturers are having trouble sourcing chips for new cars is that automotive computers are based on 10+ year old chip manufacturing techniques that produce hardened, more durable chips as compared to what goes into a PC or a cell phone. As a result, there's a limited number of suppliers who are mostly off-shore in Asia and with Covid rules, bada-bing, we have supply chain issues. For a 1982, you could probably swap over to a simple holley 2bbl carb by finding a used intake manifold from an even older Volvo. Or you can drop in a small block V8 with a carb and really make a fun ride (check out jagsthatrun.com for a swap kit!).
Probably going to simply replace them; getting 40 years of crud out and expecting them to be trouble-free is pie-in-the-sky thinking. Not altogether that expensive in comparison.
