Well, my turbo is shot
With probably less than 100k on it, it's in poor shape (don't trust that mechanic very much anyway). Ever since we had this new turbo it has leaked and has felt a little sloppy. When I was younger I didn't know any better. I recently decided to check it out and it wiggles a scary amount. Check the pic out. You can see where it's been scraping. This is not looking good. I'm trying to figure out what turbo it is. I think it's a TD05 but that part of the tag has conveniently worn away. My car has a replacement liquid cooled Mitsubishi turbo for the 89 model year. From what I understand, this is a bigger turbo than later engines which I think got a smaller Mitsubishi). Check the pic out and tell me what you think. Where can I get a rebuild for this?

I could be wrong, but after a close inspection, it doesn't seem like a four would fit in the space on my tag. There's a little bit of blue paint near the top that would cover part of the "4" digit. I think 5 goes there. I just looked at an 87 in a junk yard and I think it said TD05. I could still be wrong. Where's a good place to get a good kit?
Also, is a flat back or super? I would think flat.
I just got this information: At 104K miles in 2003 the original turbo was replaced. Now at 223K miles the turbo is dying again. So it's been more than 100k. In 8 years we've put on almost 120K miles on this new turbo. Still, I think it's a short lifespan for the care we have been taking.

Later models seem to have the TD04H, but mine appears to have the last year of the TD05, which is a bit bigger.
Now, is Kamak a good brand or should I go with another rebuild kit? Kamak has two oil galleys in the trust plate instead of on. Here's one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KAMAK...Q5fAccessories
Also, I keep running into this super back and flat back thing? I'm guessing that I need to get the right one.

I was surprised to get hits on the manufacturing code but I now know what my turbo is. It's a TD05-12B. The manufacturing code: 49178-03010 gave me that. It's the same thing as the 49178-03000, for the most part. It's another TD05-12B. It's mostly listed as an 87, so I think it was standard from 87 to 89.
Here's a rebuild on ebay that lists the manf. number and the turbo as a flat back: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turbo...Q5fAccessories
So here's what I've come up with:
11A,12A,12B,14C,17C,19C = flat back
14G,16G,18G,20G = super back

So now I've been taking it apart I see I've got one other problem. The shaft has wear too. there's a little bit of coking on the shaft, but I don't know if it's the cause. I guess I'll be needing a new turbine and shaft. I found this one: http://baeturbosystems.com/compresso...2-1-1-1-1.aspx
I mic'ed my old one and got 56.54294 for the large diameter (inducer) and 47.498 for the small one (exducer).
It looks like it could work as is, but it may be best to get a new one.
Also, there was snow inside the manifold and all over the turbine. I'm guessing that it's burnt oil, but I'm not really sure.
Check out the pics.

I'm just going to bump this one up and add the latest news.
The shaft was worn, so I found a rebuilt turbo on Ebay for $165 inclusive of shipping. It's cheaper than a rebuild kit plus a new shaft. So it arrived today. There is just a tiny bit of play in the shaft, but none of it is axial play. It seems to be good, no scraping.
Looking at the two, particularly the exhaust housing and turbine wheel. Mine is coated with a white deposit and the rebuilt one has a lot of black carbon. I'm assuming that the old motor was spewing oil since the blackness is in the scroll. My housing cleaned up beautify. The white deposits disappeared down the scroll. The turbine wheel had most of the white deposits on it. The rebuilt one is blackened. I know my old turbo was loose and leaking at least some oil. I never did notice the car smoke. What do you make of the whitish stuff on my turbo? I also found it in the exhaust manifold.
You can see my compressor housing is much shiner than the reman'ed one. He glass beaded his.
