Default what DOES an idle speed motor do?

My 740 Turbo had some problems with keeping running after start last week. My mechanic, whom I trust, upped the idle speed a bit, and gave me the option of replacing the idle speed motor, which, as it turns out, was dead.

The car is running just fine now. I don't notice real increase in idle speed at lights, etc. And it would take a lot of gas savings to pay for this $275 repair.

Our 240's idle speed motor died about 10 years ago, and we note minimal problems when first starting out.

So....should I go ahead and get a new idle speed motor or not? You are the jury!

thanks in advance

I would when you can.
The way he adjusted the idle up will only mess with the computer.
It will most likely cause problems down the road.
