Default What is this warning light?....

What does the yellow warning light to the left of the cluster indicate when illuminated? It looks like a gear with an exclamation point in the middle. It illuminated intermittently when I braked hard. It's a non ABS car, a 1991 740. It seems to have a soft brake pedal. The car sat for some time. Thanks in advance.

Have you checked the oil and transmission levels? I have not seen that light, but my guess is it is low transmission fluid level. When you step on the brake the fluid splashes around. Just a guess. The owners manual should tell you what each light means.

It might be the warning light to tell you that a bulb is out. i.e. a break light does not work.

I have a 1989 740 and am looking at the owners manual warning lights. I see nothing that looks like a gear. My only symbols are an oil can, a battery, a lightbulb with an X thru it as stated above, and a low washer fluid light that looks like a windshield with a little fountain in the middle.
