I have a 1991 Volvo 240. Planning on New springs, lowering it a little bit and adding some new wheels/tires. Want to give the car a little bit more attitude. Any ideas on what size wheels work the best would be awesome. Below is the picture I am somewhat aiming for
Depending on how you gonna use the car. Being lowered and having low profile tires like in the pic, you gonna feel every bump on the road that it will be a pain for daily use ( Unless your area got some ultra smooth road). For comfort, I do not recommend any rim larger than 15 inch, you have some OE options at 15 inch like the virgos or the mesh. Maybe condier 14inch with thick tires? if you lower it little bit, to me they also look pretty good and the tire will smooth the ride quite bit.
If you go larger you have the hydra (personally I feel they dont fit 240 bodystyle, but hey, plenty of people like it). If you start to put adapters on then there are plenty of choices, I would try some steels first at least they are cheaper, then your only worry will be quality of the adapter(dont go cheap on them). But again, even on stock setup, 16 inch is probably on the edge of comfort, anything larger than that will make the ride pretty harsh.
If you can find someone in your area with a lowered, large rim 240, try ride it a few times, that should provide some idea how excatly the car will feel after the mod then you can decide to invest or not.
Thanks Chao! I have no idea what Virgo or mesh or hydra or steel is but I will do some research ! Gave me a good place to start with and I appreciate it!

Quit ride, no squealing in corners, good stopping in the wet.
If you want better handling get IPD 1" anti-sway bars front and rear. No new shocks or springs required.
Nice pic John 👍🏼. Thx for sharing. After looking, I like the mesh wheels. Anybody have pics of mesh style wheels on their 240? If so, how do you like em? Any issues?
Seems you can accept small wheel style, I would also recommend GT wheels, 14 inch, they look like this:
Mine is re-painted because when I got them they were very rough, they also fits very nice on 240s
And Vigros looks like this:
Virgos are 15 inchs, they are very heavy alloy wheels.
Out of these 3, GTs and mesh are kinda hard to find, fair amount of Virgo around tho. I personally have no problem with any of them. These Volvo rims are very good quality. GT and mesh are very light. I think mesh is made by BBS, all of them made in German tho. The only downside of the mesh is they are hard to clean and personally I think they don't go well with some colors, but in general they are very good looking, you can also find 15in mesh. I run 195/70r14 on mesh with stock height, very comfortable ride, but might be too soft for handling "fast" corners.
I heard that GTs are stronger wheels, but not sure ture or not. They sure look nice.
Maybe try looking at some decent steel rims? Some steelies also look very good on 240 and are much cheaper.
Difficult to beat round spokes like the Minilites for easy cleaning. Another comment on tires, I've always considered stopping in the wet the weakest link in performance. I went to 15" wheels so I could fit wider tires, 205/60, and still be close to the original tire diameter of 24".
In my experience, opting for 17 or 18-inch wheels would be perfect for achieving that sleek, modern look while still maintaining the car's vintage charm.
When it comes to wheel styles, I've always been a fan of clean, classic designs. Think five-spoke or mesh patterns - they never go out of style and would complement the 240's timeless aesthetic perfectly.
