Whats the difference ?
I have a 88 760 Turbo and I'm curious what is the difference between a 740 and 760 model Volvo's since they seem to have been made at the same time. I origianally thought one model replaced the other, I think I'm wrong on that one.I'm just curious is all and if someone knows I'd love to know the difference. Thanks

RE: Whats the difference ?
The 760 made its debut in the UK in 1982 powered by a B28E V6 enginewith a choice ofmanual or autogearbox.
It was introduced to the US the following year with the V6 engine but only the auto box (3 speed with overdrive). The fog lights at that time were mounted low down in the front spoiler where they stayed until 1988. The spec was very comprehensive, even described in one part as "luxurious".
In 1984 the straight 4 turbo engine was added to the range. This had a choice of manual (4 speed + overdrive) or auto (3 speed + overdrive) boxes. Again the spec was high but there was now a choice of plush interior or leather.
From 1982 to 1985 the vehicle was only produced as a saloon (sedan). In 1986 the estate (wagon) version arrived. There was still a choice of engines but the V6 had a manual box whilst the turbo had a choice of manual or auto. The upholstery was now leather only.
The 760 was phased out in 1990.
The 740 made its debut in the UK in 1984 powered by a straight 4 1.9 or 2.3 engine with a choice of auto or manual box. The spec was not as high as that of the 760.
In 1985 the 740 crossed the Atlanticin both saloon and estate versions. The engine choice was either 2.3 NA (GLE) or 2.3 turbo. The spec was a lot higher than the UK models offeringvelour upholstery with optional leather. Gearboxes were manual 4 speed with overdrive or an optional3 speed auto with overdrive.
In 1989 the 740 GL was added to the range in the US. This was a lower spec with only a 5 speed manual box offered. The GLE and turbo models continued although it looks as though the spec had gone down slightly. There was still a choice of manual (4 speed + overdrive) or auto (3 speed + overdrive).
In 1991 the model range dropped to 740 sedan or wagon and 740 turbo sedan or wagon. The spec had dropped quite a bit asthe model's successor, the 940 had made its debut. The 740 sedan/wagon had the auto box only but the turbo was still being offered with an optional manual box.
In 1992 the range went down again with only the 740 sedan or wagon and the 740 turbo wagon. All vehicles had the auto box as standard with no option. This was the last year for the 740.
