Default whining noise

8 months ago I bought a 94 940 and about a month ago a whining noise started emitting from the car. It happens when I first start it in the morning or when its cold. It happens in all gears and is generally in sync with the tachometer. If I rev it up 4 or 5 times even in neutral or park, it will go away. I can hear it plainly from inside the car but not from the outside. It sounds like its either coming from the tranny or the back of the motor. Its driving me crazy. Any ideas?

Also, my wipers are going on the blink. It started with just the slow setting shutting off randomly, but now I am down to just the fastest setting. In the settings that don't work, I can hear a faint clicking noise from the relay compartment in tune to the right speed. Sometimes if I leave the setting in one of the settings that don't work and go over a bump, the wipers will turn on. What should I check/replace first?

Thanks in advance

Default RE: whining noise

I too am having some LOUD noise from my 94 940T wagon. It seems to be loudest when it's cold outside and soon after starting. After the car runs for a while/warms up, it's not as loud. It sounds as loud as a tornado siren and I think you can hear it from outside the vehicle as well as inside. Of course, I had a mechanic listen to it, but it wasn't nearly as loud for him. He thinks it's probably something with the transmission since it only makes noise while the car in is gear. It whines both as I accelerate and as I slow down - mostly when it's shifting (I have an automatic).

Any ideas or if anyone has had this problem, please let me know your thoughts!
Thanks!

Default RE: whining noise

After checking tranny fluid level, I'd put the rear wheels on jackstands and have someone 'drive' it while its cold and see if you can locate the source, could very well be a universal joint or shaft bearing, or even output flange.
