Default Wind driven avocado punched through my 740 Turbo wagon's tailgate window

During yesterday's incredible Christmas Day windstorm, a round avocado as hard as a rock was ripped off a tree by a gust and sent like a cannonball through the tailgate glass. It punched a hole as big as a softball and shattered the glass into fragments that went flying into the interior. Thankfully, the car was parked so nobody was hurt. Here is the prob: I'm on Oahu, and I can't find replacement glass out here. Does anybody know where I can source glass from the "mainland" 48 and get it shipped out to Hawaii? Otherwise, I will probably have to scrap the car, which is a rare, manual transmission 1990 turbo red wagon with turbo plus kit and I am the original owner, having picked it up in Sweden in 1990. I'd hate to see this wagon consigned to the junkyard......... any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hm, you can send it to me! Rear glass shouldn't be too hard to find. Voluparts should have it...

any autoglass shop should be able to source a window. wagon rear windows are the same for all 740/940/740 and early 960. won't vouch for late 960.

Lev, I will research Voluparts. Thanks for the suggestion.

Pierce, I checked with Honolulu aftermarket glass shops and they told me it was incredibly difficult to get that particular replacement glass for a wagon. They suggested I call local junkyards, so I called the places on Oahu and Maui and nobody had an early 90's Volvo wagon.

Does anybody else have any ideas for me? This car is a classic that deserves to stay on the road for another 175K miles, not suffer an inglorious, undignified death at the hands of a flying avocado.

yeah, its NLA from Volvo too.

hmmmm.

are there any older euro repair shops on the islands ? ask around. maybe they know someone who has a rusty 740/940 in their back yard that you could snag that window for a reasonable fee.

I'm pretty sure those are installed with butyl tape which is pretty generic. if your door has any rust bubbles, good time to strip and grind/sandblast, patch and paint when the glass is out..

This just came in on the 23rd... $40, $50 for the whole gate,
Also try carpart.com
Also this:

Any yard that has one of these will likely have the back glass. It's just a matter of convincing them to pack it and ship it to Hawaii.
I have never taken a glass out of the back gate but it seemed like a project on my 245 when I changed the whole gate.
Copart and IAAI are the two major salvage cars disposal sites, they often have Volvos you can buy for a couple of hundred dollars. There are several 7/9 series in Portland right now.

Why not simply replace it with Lexan? Lexan with a scratch resistant coating is also available.

Even easier, get some plastic wrap, tastefully attach it with duct tape all around, and you are ready for the next adventure!

Lev, that is rich!
Seriously, the use of Lexan should be just about perfect. It is very impact resistant and in the proper thickness would have been able to resist the impact of that Avocado. It stays clear for years to come, and does not scratch like Plexiglas. With the coating, it is a serious good choice if a replacement window cannot be found, and will be difficult to differentiate from a glass window from a distance.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. Would Lexan pass the safety inspection which is required yearly out here?

lexan, aka polycarbonate, will yellow and go crusty after a few years of sunshine.

How would you replace the glass exactly? How would you cut the Lexan to the exact dimensions? How would you go about securing it in the rubber frame? I do a lot of projects, I experiment, and I can tell you that unless your standards are extremely low this would not work, that's why in jest I recommended the clear plastic--just as atrocious but much easier. I think by now we discovered several glass panels so let's hope the OP can get it done the right way! BTW, it looks like removal and reinstalling the glass into another gate is not that easy. I handled a 240 rear hatch recently and it didn't seem like an easy job to take out the glass...

Guys,
I heard from the representative at Voluparts and here is what he sent me via email:VOLUPARTS INC. -- since 1977

Hi. sorry, but a tailgate or just a tailgate glass is VERY expensive to
ship [ from most anywhere] so try very hard to find it near you .
it can come off
any 745 or 945 or 965 [ all are 5 door wagons 740, 760, 940, or 960 ] from 1984 thru 94 . OR
it can come off any 95 thru 97 960 wagon or a 98 V90 wagon .
[ and those tailgates will also have a small lip spoiler above the top of the glass, which is incidental to some folks.]most folks buy a whole tailgate, because the glass must be removed / replaced by a glass man, since it's bonded to the metal tailgate and has to be cut-away and cleaned and reinstalled with new sealant to the other tail gate .

So what is he talking about in terms of expense for having the glass air shipped out here? Am I looking at $500 or something to have somebody pick it up at a junkyard, pack it, and ship it to me?

OK, if I have to go to the mainland 48 to get the glass, how much am I looking at, ballpark, for getting it removed from a wreck, packed securely, and shipped via air freight to Honolulu? If it's within reason, I would do it to keep this wagon on the road.

Moetheshmoe,
Do you think this salvage yard would pack and send rear window glass from one of these wagons to Honolulu? Voluparts said it was too expensive, and the Row52 website doesn't work for Hawaii people because we live farther than 500 miles away so you can't input your request on the site.

Good news! I called my Volvo idie and he happened to know a guy on Oahu who had bought a 940 wagon for a project and never completed it. I made contact with the guy, and have arranged to buy the whole tailgate tomorrow for $100.

it might just turn out to be easier to paint his tailgate to match your car than to remove the glass. IIRC, there's wire harnesses in both hinges on a 740/940 wagon, so you want to remove the interior hard plastic trim around the headliner in back to access the connectors for these. swap your lock cylinder so your same key works.
