Default ZF to AW trans. switch on 740GLE

I’ve just bought a 1988 240GLE Sedan with the B230F (non-turbo) engine and ZF transmission. The transmission has problems and I’m planning to replace with a used transmission. The junk dealer I’m dealing with suggests replacing the ZF trans. with the AW trans. as the AW is more reliable. I understand that the drive shaft and the oil cooling lines will also need to be replaced. He says not to replace the shift lever as he will bypass the solenoid so the overdrive button on the shift lever won’t be needed. He’s asking $450 for the trans., drive shaft and oil lines.

Three questions: Is this replacement feasible, is this a normal price for this transmission, and can most transmission shops handle this conversion?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. James
