timing belt broke 1988 volvo 740gle

Hi - timing belt broke and mechanic told me it could have damaged the engine,is this true? He said pistons could have broken???

No install a new belt and turn key to start and go!!!

It doesn't bend Valves. Unless you were doing about 120 MPH when it broke.
