I bought an old 1990 960 a few months ago, and I have been trying to do some research on the car to find out what I can about it, But I don't even know what engine is in it, I was told by the guy that sold it to me that it was a 2.9L, then I looked it up online an saw that it was registered as a 2.8 which are both inline 6's then I took it to my Volvo service center and they told me it was the V6 and not the I6 I originally thought, which is as far as I know a 3.0L and made by Renault? but I can't seem to find any info anywhere on which engine it actually has. Is there anyway to tell? Does anyone know? I have attached a photo of the engine if it helps.

 

Though I have never seen the V6 by Renault, it appears you do not have the inline 6, 2.9 litre, so I would say you have the Renault. Unless something really weird took place and some swapped out another engine of some sort.

But you do not have the 2.9L that is for sure.

I believe it would be the 2.8L V6 PRV, or the B280F V6

 

so does that mean I have the 170hp one or the 204hp ?

well... I would, if it only puts out 170hp (if its that PRV in the 760). I would prefer to take it out and drop in something a bit better, like one of the newer volvo inline 6's or a bmw v8. anyway I have to sell it as I need something bigger, a wagon or SUV (I wish I could get the V70 XC)
