1992 960 Will Not Start
I have a 1992 Volvo 960 that will not start. This vehicle houses the Motronic 1.8 computer(ECU). I performed a code check with the on board diagnostic. I used test mode 2 to get the following codes. The codes I recieved were 1-3-1, 3-1-4, and 2-2-3. According to the Chilton's Volvo Manual I purchased, these codes are as follows 1-3-1 (No Signal from timing pick-up), 3-1-4 (Camshaft signal absent), 2-2-3 (Idle Valve signal absent or faulty). I have replaced all faulty sensors(Camshaft, Timing Pick-Up and Idle CIS Vavle) and clear codes. I attempted to start vehicle and nothing. It still did not start. When I checked the codes again the same three codes reappeared. I then check for spark from all coil units. The only cylinders that fired were 1-2-3. Coils 4-5-6 had no spark present. If you can help please reply.

I drove the car to last on October 29, 2004. After my meeting I went to start the car and it would not start. I left the car overnight in the parking lot. When I returned the morning of October 30, 2004 I tried to start the car. It started but the idle was very high. Since I only lived 5 minute from the field I drove it home. When I parked the vehicle, I turned it off. I then tried to restart the vehicle and it just keep turning over and would not catch. This is when I ran a diagnostic and recieved the codes. Since then I have replaced the Idle Control valve, Timing Pick-Up sensor and camshaft position sensor. Now all codes have been corrected and still no start. The only sensor I replaced was in August of 2004 and it was the front power stage for coils 1,3,5.
Are you getting spark to all 6 coils now if not check the wiring going to coils 4,5,6 the wires are known to back out of the plugs.Do you have fuel pressure now?
I have since taken my vehicle to the shop for diagnostic. The tech performing the diagnostic has found that the vehicle is not registering a fuel pressure. Do you happen to know what is going on?
Did he check for power at the fuel pump?Is the fuel pump relay good?Is the fuel filter plugged?Did they explain everything they did to you?If so can you give me a little more info.
I conversed with the tech this afternoon that is performing the diagonostic on my vehicle. Due to your question I asked if the following were checked. Fuel Pump result (working), Fuel Filter result (not clogged and functioning) he has not reached the fuel relay yet. He was beginning to get frustrated because he could not find the problem. He still needs to check the fuel relay and make sure nothing is clogging the fuel lines. What do you think? I keep in contact to inform those in this forum about the problem. Who know in the future someone may have this problem and this post can help. For GP(General Purpose) I hope no one experiences this problem it's costly.
If the fuel pump is working then the relay should be fine.Unless he just bypassed the relay and tested the fuel pump from the rear of the car with a battery source. He can check for flow at the filter. Then unscrew the fuel line at the engine to find out where the fuel stops flowing. Also I believe there is an adaptor by the fuel filter to read fuel pressure. How did he determain the fuel pump was good? Some times you can hear it running but it won't pump the fuel.
