Question 1992 volvo 960

I have a 1992 volvo 960. The light on the column flash w e or s e back and forth. Could this be a switch or some module and is there a way to determine what it is? Does anyone know what is wrong? My check engine light continues flashing, I dont know how to check my obd-i for codes.

Today when driving the flashing stopped and is driving in E, the right way. I am confused because this happens and then doesnt happen. How do I check the codes on the car to see why my check engine light is staying on?

it means than u have DTC (Diagnosis trouble code) in your transmission system. and it is depending on what dtc's u have to determine what kind of problem u have.

I actually had that with my '95 and '97 model. I used the OBD-II port to read the code and reset it. I guess it was a hichup because after I reset the code everything went back to normal.

You should have the OBD-I system under the hood. Search this and other sites to learn how to read it, then reset it, and maybe it will go away. Make a note of the code in case something starts going wrong you will know what the code was.

u can check the code by a scanner either OEM or aftermarket. Prefer OEM Volvo Vst.

Would I need to buy the oem? I thought there was a built in computer reader on these cars and a place to manual reset the computer. I have taken it to my local mechanic (and napa) who does my oil changes and he told me to bring it to the dealer because his reader doesnt work on the 92 volvo. I thought either he is not familiar with volvos of just doesnt know what he is doing. I dont have dealer cash and I just need to find out what is going on with my car. The check engine light stays on and the W E S mode randomly switch. I just purchased a new neutral safety swtich and am waiting to get that through the mail in hopes this will fix the problem. I just wish there was an easier way to read any codes that are coming up.

There is an easy way to read the codes. You need to do it with your OBD-I port under the hood. It should look like this:
Need to read fault codes '95 960 OBD 1 - Volvo Owners Club Forum

Yes tranny codes do show as well. Not sure what port you have to get them from, maybe 4 or 5.

Great this is super helpful. One code I got was a 122 which is air temp sensor signal is that the same as an o2 sensor, any idea where it is located on the 92 960?

I have a 122 code and a 232 code. Is this an o2 sensor? If so how many are there and where is it located?

Usually O2 sensors are located on the exhaust. One just off the motor and the other after the catalytic converter. They are bolted in and have wires running off of them .

If you decide to replace the O2 sensors, try to get OEM sensors. Other sensors usually do not work well. If you can get some from a salvage yard, that may work, they have worked for me in the past. If you have to get them from the stealer, ouch.

If you pulled these codes at Socket # 2, it looks like your MAF Sensor might be toast. A big reason why MAF goes bad is the Air thermostat in the Airbox malfunctions and does not close off hot exhaust air, and this hot air fries the MAF in short order.

First check operation of the Air Thermostat. If it is not closing the flapper, you can replace it, or you can shove it closed.

You can also try to clean the MAF. Take it apart. First dunk its tip into Simply Green Multipurpose cleaner, wipe it clean. Then dunk it in 99% rubbing alcohol. Wipe it clean and reinstall it.

I pulled them from 1. I really think my PNP is bad, but I dont think it is possible for me to do this job. The only thing is I dont get that code..I am a little confused but suppose I will just go with it since I have the new pnp switch.
