Smile 1993 960 Wagon advice?

Hello there,

I'm shopping for a new old Volvo, and a 93 960 Wagon has caught my eye. All the Volvo's I've owned in the past have been 4 cylinder engine models, and I know they are bulletproof. This 960 has a l6 engine and I'm a bit nervous, what is your take on the 93 960 wagons? The one in question is an automatic with 130k miles on it.

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, yes I owned a 760 several years back and it was great. However I do believe that the 760 still used the red block 4 cylinder engine.
My concern about this 960 is that they use the 6 cylinder aluminum engine, I don't know if they hold true to the traditional indestructible connotation given to older Volvos

No, they don't. The 960 motor is thirsty, and it needs meticulous maintenance to be reliable--any deferred work or spotty records make it a crap shoot. The trannies are electronic, not the old reliable AWs. The earlier ones, like the 1993, motors are even less desirable requiring Tbelt changes every 20K miles. 960 are cheaper than 940s. 760 may have the PRV v6 or the B230T (Red Block).

Wound up buying a beautiful 1995 940 sedan, non-turbo, my understanding is that these are just about the newest cars you can get with the reliable red block engines. Drives perfect, timing belt was replaced at 102k (It's at 176k now) and all electronic features work.

Excellent choice! Non turbos are much easier to live with and more economical... The 1995 is the last Red Block in the US, 1998 in most other world markets...
