1997 960 wagon
Hello All,
Lately the fuel gauge has indicated false fuel tank levels. A couple of days ago, I started the old girl up and noticed I had 1/4 tank of fuel. I knew this was wrong, for I had filled up recently. I went to a service station and it took $9.00 for the pump to stop, now I had 3/4 indicated.
Next day, I started the car and it showed dead empty, with the amber light on. As I was driving the gauge inched towards full enough to remove the abmber low fuel light. I got to my destination was shopping for about 60 minutes, started the car up, now I had 3/4 of a tank. Regardles of how full the tank is, the indication is no more than 3/4.
I suspect the fuel level sending unit. Has anyone seen this? Is there a way to check the sending unit, other than substitution? I replacement is needed, are there any tips/tricks inviolved?
Thanks in advance.

Would be best to just get a new one and install it.
You access the sending unit from inside back of the car.
There is a cover you can remove to see the sending unit.
The sending unit and fuel pump are all in one.

I meant to thank you a long time ago but forgot (getting old ain't for sissies). Regadless thanks for reading and replying to my post. The cursed sending unit hasn't failed yet, and I have a new sending unit sitting in a box. I guess I will need to obtain a tool for removal of the old when the time comes.
