I have an 89 760 with about 230K miles. Stalled on the freeway last week. Shop gave me $1200 est. to replace both fuel pumps. Replaced in-tank pump and sock myself. Ran fine until last night. Stalled again, seems to be starving for fuel. Fuel gauge malfunctions sporadically, sending unit seemed to catch a little in one place when I checked it when I had it out.

Could the sending unit in any way be a cause of the stalling or just a coincidental problem? Any ideas? I have the in-line pump but haven't replace it yet.

Im curious if you've solved your problem or not? I have a 88 760 with a simular problem. Both fuel pumps were changed and I still had the same problem stalling. Before the in-tank pump was changed my fuel gauge was working fine and now it's only working sometimes. But one thing I did is replace the fuel relay switch thats located behind the ash tray via the passenger side area. So far so good , but when the gas tank went below half it was still happening, but I'm still testing and the car is just now reaching the 1/2 way point and I want to see if its going to stall out again.
