92 960 no start...
Well i finished putting my 960 back together today, however it will not turn over at all the the starter will not engage when i turn the key to start nothing, the starter isnt hot at all, and the contacts on the battery are good..
well the shifter is in park but I can move it out of gear without my foot on the brake before I had to turn the key to on and pull the override to put it into neutral to move it in my driveway now i can move it without doing that. What else should I try? Thanks again
How often would these go bad? I would think if it was starter it would get hot or something and solenoid doesnt click, though i hear one click when i turn the key to start. What would be the best way to jump the starter?
If it is the PNP switch, then you can remove it and clean out the old dried grease, and re lube it with a nice synthetic.
You may be able to start it though, I trick, that works for a while is to place the car on a flat surface, ignition switch on, press brake pedal and row the gear selector back and forth many times, 30 or 40. Then try starting it.
The rowing will clean the contact points inside the switch. Since it is located on the outside of the trans next to the down pipe of the exhaust the grease gets cooked until it binds up the small delicate springs on the contact areas. Cleaning and re greasing usually takes care of it. When reattaching the switch, there is an adjustment where the bolt passes thru, the slotted hole is the adjustment. With the car safely secured from rolling on jacks, set ignition switch to on, engine off, place gear selector in reverse, move the PNP switch until the reverse lights go on, now find the center point of the reverse light setting, then secure PNP switch. Try starting the engine, if it runs, then turn it off and and then place the gear selector in another gear but park and try to start it, it should not start.
Hope that is your fix.

did the rowing trick now it will turn over, and will run breifly using starting fluid but wont idle on its own it will try to start, the gas in the tank is almost a year old should i try putting some new premium gas in...?
I am guessing the fuel will be fine, look for a vacuum leak. Make sure the little rubber hose that connects to the idle valve is properly seated.
Check for cracks in the air intake, you might try disconnecting the MAF and see if that helps, also the temp sensor may not be sending a correct signal.
Those kind of things would alter the idle and make it miss. Could you also be lacking spark in some cylinders?

the car sat for almost a year with only 6 gallons or so in it, i will check the vacuum lines etc, im pretty sure its firing on all 6 because with the starting fluid it would rev up to about 2-3k easy then die off, maybe idle really low for a few seconds. Its getting fuel i know at the rail when i got the car i put a whole thing of Isoheet in the tank, i also put a little bit of oil in each cylinder, i pulled a few plugs and they had a little bit of the oil on them that i had put in the cylinders.. i had to wire up a end plug for the coolant temp sensor,
