Exclamation 960 FALLING APART haynes manual, anyone???

reposting, hopefully in the right section (for the 2nd time...):

this is a repost of what I put in the welcome section (just joined today) sorry if it's long winded, but after fixing one problem, I got 6 others. Lucky me.

Just got a 1995 black 960, and it's starting to fall apart. passenger door won't open from inside or out, although window works, winter mode works for trans, but not sure about eco (might be stuck in sport - getting ~13mpg overall), heater on the drivers side doesn't work, and a hissing noise just started from under the glove box area. I can only surmise that this is a vacuum actuated control system, as I lost the ability to recirculate cabin air at the same time... I fiddled with the climate control until the hissing stopped, but I'm concerned that it's affecting the door as well (went within a day of eachother... also, when I got the hissing to stop, the passenger seat no longer de-hissifies upon shutdown of the car...that part never bugged me...)

Also have a clanking/metal on metal noise from what seems to be under the car (usually at 30mph+ or on bumpy roads like my 1/4 mile driveway). Not the exahaust, I jacked it up and kicked it from muff to cat, and it's sound. That would have been too easy... Maybe a control arm, or whatever is back there on a rwd car? (I spent too long working on my civic when I had her)

And of course, I had to get the only volvo for which Haynes has no published manual... So off to the surgeon to remove my arm and leg as payment to the dealership...

Hopefully some kind folks here can help me avoid as much of that as I can...

Other than that, she drives like a dream, and even handles like a sports car when at speeds over 100mph (at 35 the turns feel like my grandmother's oldsmobile :-/ I did just come from a mustang, though...)
should I try to sell it? part it out? there's no rust at all, and the clearcoat is still almost perfect... and I'm in the mid atlantic (philadelphia area)...

I just can't afford $200/month for gasoline anymore!

Guess my first priority should be the door, since it won't pass inspection like that :-) (due in July)

Thanks in advance!

Seriously, if you can't do a basic internet search, sell the car, you won't be able to fix it.
This in two minutes of searching:

You want manual #72303

Regards, Andrew.

Ah, I've always used Haynes because I thought the Chiltens guides were like big encyclopedias for mechanics in shops (before they had all the software stuff).

But thanks for the belittling!

Regards :-)

Default Don’t Buy Chiltons for 960

I have a 1997 960 and that Chiltons exact manual. For me, it's fairly useless. The instructions and pictures are actually for the newer models listed, which are an entirely different generation from the 740/760/940/960 era. It is not specific enough to the 960 to be very helpful.

And you are correct, no Haynes for the 960.

All these manuals, except a Bentley, are useless.
In your case I'd get rid of this car. You say you just bought it, did it have all these flaws? You couldn't have paid too much for it...
960s are complicated for a Volvo, uneconomical and generally unloved....

Speak for yourself. We sold our high mileage 960 wagon and bought a low mileage V70 wagon. Nothing wrong with the V70, runs like new.

And that's the problem. Get into a corner a bit hot, and all you can do is stand on the brakes and hope not to go off the road. With the 960, punch the throttle, kick out the read end and proceed on down the road.

Accelerate on a wet road, the V70 spins the front wheels and heads for the ditch. The 960 would just proceed on down the road.

Want to accelerate? Wait for the V70 to spin up, whereas the 960 was ready to go.

True, I grew up on RWD cars, but we have also had a few FWD. I hated them all, but I hate the V70 more because it has enough HP to get you in trouble.

Well, yeah, I do speak for myself... The V70, like all White Blocks, FWD Volvos are even worse than the 960. Volvos after the Red Blocks are worthless, much better to have a Camry or Passat.
