Default 960 Help required, transmission

Hi,

First post and I'm kinda of regretting purchasing my first ever Volvo, a 960 which is a 1991 Station Wagon, 3.0 Auto.....110,000 miles with full service history. I thought I had bought a good one and in a way I still do, but I've got a couple of problems and need help to point me in the right direction and stop my wife looking at me with evil eyes!!!!

Problem 1: A yellow "Up Arrow" is showing up in the instrument cluster. From what I can understand this means that the car is not changing upto into 4 th/Overdrive on the automatic........is this the case? and if so how do I repair this? Could it be Overdrive relay...I hear that these fail. If so, does this apply to the 960 3.0 and where does the relay live?

Problem 2: Water loss. The car is loosing quite a lot of coolant. It has a new radiator and its not head gasket related. Whats the likely culprit.....water pump?....if so any tips on where to look etc etc or could it be something else.

Many thanks and look forward to hearing from anybody who can save me having to make more excuses to my wife!!!

You need to pull the codes out of the transmission to find out the problem.Under the hood is a little black box that you can use to pull the codes.Follow the link to find out how to pull the codes.I have inserted a picture with the codes listed on it.The A and number on the top of the page of the pic I posted is what one you need to insert the wire in to pull the codes.

Check the Overflow bottle for cracks. Can you see a general area that it is leaking from front of the engine or back of the engine?
You could also pull the timing cover by removing one screw to see if the water pump is leaking.

Thanks Tech, I'll pull the timing cover tomorrow and see if its the water pump.......if it is, how easy are they to replace and are they expensive?

Anybody else got any thoughts out there?

Cheers

Martin
