960 window problems
Hi I'm having some problems with the rear passenger window on the family 1996 960. I tried the search function on the site but I couldn't find anything with the same issue as mine.
Anyways, since we got the car a few years ago the rear passenger window was always a little funny, it would roll down very slowly and often get stuck halfway and I had to either push it down or hold the power window button down and listen to the motor strain until it went down. The window would scream the entire time as it went down regardless of which I did to the point that people would turn to see what the noise was. I never had a problem rolling it up thought.
So, one day about 2 weeks ago the window just stops working all together. It doesnt move and I can't hear the motor going anymore. As this is where I sit in the car and it's summer, every drive in the car I'm a pool of sweat. Does anyone have any info as to how I can fix this or what the problem might be? Thanks.

Ok thanks, if it is the motor, is it difficult or expensive to replace. We are staying in a hotel for the next month while our new house is getting ready so I have no access to any tools apart from a hammer and screwdriver set. Should I just take it to the dealer?
If motor is bad it will be the result not the cause. Make sure window tracks are not binding causing motor to overheat and burn out. if windows go up ok, but bind going down often lubing tracks with silicone spray can help. Do all windows once a year as pm.
Good Luck

Capt. Caveman, thanks for the laugh. Actually forcing the window down time after time is asking for it to get stuck there. I'm sorry, couldn't help not to see the humor in this one.
I would agree with Igbdad. You probably needed to lube the track or something in there. The door panel comes off pretty easy and I would guess you could get a motor and replace it with little tools. Possibly even the ones in the trunk, they go a long way with these cars. You should be able to pull the panel, loosen the motor, manually raise the window and secure the motor to keep the window up.
Again, thanks for the laugh.

I think that is better, being stuck up. So I guess you have a problem with you AC??? If so, you may want to check the freon level. You can go by an auto parts store or Wal-Mart and get a freon charging kit and check to see if your freon is low. They have gauges connected to the freon bottles now. So once you hook up the bottle, if it's low, just give it a shot. They also have good instructions on it.
Hope that helps.

For those that are interested, here are directions to take the panel off:

I found them helpful... Now I'm going to try to fix this same problem on my 93 960 driver's window!

My '93 960 driver's-side rear window stopped working 1/2 way open.
To avoid rain getting inside, I was able to raise/close the window as follows:
1. Took apart switch to see 5 pins: black wire, 2 reds & 2 others.
(ignore all but black & closest red wire which power motor)
2. With car off I ran jumper cables from battery &
a. to lower window, I connected black to black and red to red
b. reverse to raise window
3. If window doesn't move, your motor needs replacement
Anyone know the next step? Clean/replace the switch?
Full disclosure: I dicovered above by first removing my door panel to
see where I could power the black & red wires from the motor. I took
apart connector near the motor and applied power via jumper cables
to lower/raise the window. Replacing the door panel I found I could
raise/lower the window at the switch as described in 1-2 above.

Obviously a bad switch. Cheap to replace. Cleaning doesn't really work and rarely go well back together once taken apart. You can try to clean the contacts, file them down a little if corroded but I'd get a new switch.
Thanks for your suggestion,
Olaf
