Default 97 960 Brake shaking, shuttering

At various speeds, my 960 has this shaking problem while braking. Some while back, when it first started, I thought it was wheel balance problem. However, it only happens while braking, and not all the time. Most of the time, when this shaking happens is around 60-70 mph, but it has happened at any speeds above 10 mph.

This have been going on progressively worse, since approximately 2 weeks after purchasing this 960. Yesterday, I purchased some new tires. The same size which was on it when I purchased it. 215/55/16. They are only slightly larger than the stock size 205/55/16.
I am now curious whether this size is just too big? While the wheels were off I rechecked the condition of the pads I just put on after I noticed the shaking. Rotors, pads, and lines are still in great shape.

My suspension could use replacing. The creaking from the strut mounts has been annoying ever since buying this car. Any suggestions, re-do brakes, replace suspension (it dips while braking), or bushings, please help?

BTW, with the new tires, shaking is about 50% smoother, but still is itermittent.

Look at the Lower control arm bushings. There is a big round one at the back of the Control Arm. They are known to break.

It might also be warped rotors.

OK tech,

The control arm bushing on front (20% wear) appear in much better shape than the ones on the rear(70% wear). However, someone else told me about the warped rotors. I will attempt to re-do this brake job by the end of July, hopefully that much time will not destroy my braking completely. I could do the job as soon as next week, but I really want the best parts for the $$$.

My question with the rotors is: Are vented, drilled, or OEM type a better job for the 960? Also, the pads are OEM I replaced about 3 months ago (non-ceramic on front, ceramic in rear). Should I go ahead, and mod the pads also for better performance?

Thanks for all help,
Kevin

I would do the BIG bushings in the control arms first.
Then go with either Brembo or Zimmerman rotors.
If you don't like squeeling brakes stay oem on the Pads.

The bushings being bad will cause the shaking as well.

Thanks tech,

Do you know of any better quality struts for this 960 other than Sensatrac. When I put sensatrac on my 740, they didn't last very long, maybe 30K, and they were out for the count.

Since, I have replace them under the lifetime warranty, this car hasn't been driven as much. However, I don't want to take this same problem on, with the 960. I would love to go with Koni, but they don't list anything for this year model 960/S90.

The reason for asking, when I do the bushing, I am also going to change ball joints, strut mounts, shocks, and struts.

Again, thanks.

Try to Find BOGE they are OEM and usually really good.
Check out this site if you haven't already.

Also in the General section I made a post with links to sites. You might find more parts there.
