Default A/C issue

When I purchased my '95 960 I found the A/C compressor wire unplugged. Why, I do not know. What is a safe way to test the unit without risking stressing the serpentine belt. Any ideas guys?

I'd plug it in, with the A/C OFF, then start the engine. Then turn the A/C ON, see what happens: if you hear a high pitched screech (worst case scenario, frozen compressor), just turn the A/C off.

Do you have gas in the A/C system? You never know why the compressor was unplugged; people do strange things--you may have perfectly good A/C, not likely, but possible...
