Default cracked coolant cap and warning light

I recently bought a 1997 960 with 192,000 miles, very well maintained, extremely nice inside and out. I have a peculiar problem with it, however. Soon after buying it, I got a red light indicator telling me the coolant level was low. I checked, and sure enough, the reservoir under the hood was empty. I filled it with about 1.5 quarts of water and the light went off. A day or two later it came on again. Another quarter of water, and it went off. The thing never gets hot (according to the temperature gauge), and there is never any steam, but it keeps doing this. I noticed once that the cap on the reservoir was cracked. I replaced it, and no light for more than 2 days. On the 3rd day I took a one hour trip. When I arrived, there was steam coming from under the hood. I looked, and a pressure plug had come out of the radiator. I put it back in, refilled the water and put the old cap back on. Now, that told me there was too much pressure under the cap, so I got the coolant system flushed at Jiffy Lube. I still have to put 1 to 2 quarts of water in every other day or so. Should I put the new cap back on? It came from some non-Volvo parts store, so maybe I should get a Volvo cap. Or, do I need to take it to a dealer and find out what is going on. Oh, one more clue, the seller told me he recently changed the water pump (but probably he didn’t notice the cracked cap). Thanks, Jim
