Default Crunching noise

Hello,
Once in a while, when I am backing out of my garage, or anywhere for that matter, I here a sound from under the car that sounds just like running over a plastic drinking cup or aluminum can. Every time I have looked, there is nothing there. Strange one eh? Anyone got an idea on this one?
Thanks, John

If it is that car start by making sure every thing in the front end is tight including all bolts.

Sorry, it is a 97 960. I will check what I can on the front end. Doesn't sound like that's where it's coming from, but I am getting older.
Thanks, John

There is a square plate over where the steering rack is. There is 3 bolts holding it on. If they are not tight they can make a pop noise.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I watched while my son backed straight out of the garage. We both heard the sound and he stopped. He asked, did I run over a coke can? It sounds exactly like that. I'm betting it's something like you said. Thanks again,
John

Your wlecome. Also check the screws that go through the body under the hood into the front engine craddle. The passenger side is easy to see and get to with a really long extension but the drivers side is a Pita.

Will do. One more thing. In the maintainance record book, I see where it has been seviced at the intervals listed. Mostly by a Volvo service shop. Other than where is lists oil changes, all I can see is that it has been serviced. Would i be stupid to assume that they changed the timing belt and tensioner when they were supposed to etc? After all, they are certified Volvo people.
Thanks, John

I would think they would have as well. But you might want to inspect it to be 100% sure.

Called the people who worked on the car. Found out that it was changed at 170,000 miles and was serviced regularly. That is a big plus. Thank you guys for your help and quick responses,
John
