Is the seat only moving on the one side??
My 960 did the same thing, what it is; there is a shaft on each side of the motor that powers gears on each side of the seat, what happend was that the cable on the left side had come off inside the sleeve and all i had to do was take apart the gear case and re insert the cable....

Same problem. Had it in to Manhattan Volvo for several things- only thing they did right was the emissions trouble shoot (which is why I went to the dealer).
When I pulled the seat out to crank the slides back into a position so I could sit in it it worked fine when I put it back. Two possibles: 1) right side cableas the previous poster said or 2) something jamming the slide. I took about three dollars in change out from around the slide so that was my guess (my Dad's change, bought the car from him).
If you need to pull the seat it's easy- four bolts at the corners, a couple of electrical connections at the front end of the left slide (2or 3, all at the same spot), and then yank. There are a couple of posts in the middle of the slides that have to be disengaged, so once you are sure you have the electrical loose don't be afraid to yank the seat back and forth.
