so i talked him down to 750...
volvo experts does this seem to be a bad problem with volvos?
does this mean im going to have to replace the head gasket?
please let me know if i am making a wise investment...

Depends. Can you do the work yourself? If so, it might not be a bad idea. I'd ask for a compression and leakdown test before going to look at it if it's a good ways away from you. I'm doing a HG on my '95 960 that I picked up for $400 (not nearly as clean as yours looks though). If you can do the work yourself, it'll be <$1k a repair, so.....

Looks great for the price....Do the head gasket and a few other small maintenance items and you will still have a great price on a great car.
