Default I'm new to volvos...can someone throw me a line?

I have recently aquired a 1992 Volvo 960 in absoulte dazzling condition for its age, the only thing showing ware on this car is the leather seats (apparently the previous owner did not know how to properly condition leather). But I have one small problem. I bought the car for 300 clams. The gentlemen I bought it from said it was just badly out of time which for all intents and purposes it sound so. But after the deal was done and I got it back to my garage I noticed blowback coming out of the dipstick channel. Further disassembly proved to be bent valves, burnt out rings, and possibly a bearing or two. I live in the middle of no where when it comes to foriegn cars and I want to try and do this myself being an accomplished mechanic on domestic and some ricer imports. what I was considering doing was putting a crate engine from another brand into the car also changing out the tranny. the reason I came to this conclussion is all tries at finding a replacement engine in the state have failed. Can anyone give me suggestions?

If the lower end is so so then rebuild the head.

Or spend some money and time and convert over to a Ford 302.

Might give you some ides.
IMO you have the best model 960 to convert to a V-8.

1992 should still have the solid Axle.
The indipendant suspension on the newer one uses a Single Fiberglass rear spring.
Nothing can really be done with the setup to stiffen it or lower the car.
