lower steering column housing 94 960

I need to replace the turn signal/cruise control switch on my 94 960. It looks like I should be able to remove the steering column housing without first removing the steering wheel. There are 7 holes on the lower half of the housing that have torx screws that I removed. The upper half comes off easily now, and I can get to the screws that hold the switch onto the column. However, there are 2 connectors for the switch: one plugs directly into the switch and I think I can remove it, but there is a wire bundle that goes into the depths of where the lower housing is with a connector on it that I can't get to with the lower housing in place. I can't find any other screws to remove, but can't get the lower housing off. It might be held in place by the column tilt adjuster. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks

I figured out how to remove the tilt adjust lever to get the lower housing off, but now can't get at the connector at the end of the switche's wiring harness. It seems totally inaccessible. The Chilton manual just says disconnect the connecter behind the instrument panel, near the steering column, but it's blocked by a black bracket of some sort and it's so cramped I can't see how to get at it. Do I need to remove the steering wheel to be able to get access to screws to remove things to get at the connector?
