Default new volvo owner here... :)

Well, we drove up to the sticks to check out a new car. We bought it. I'll go pick it up tomorrow I believe.

1989 Volvo 760 Turbo. Was advertised as a 740. It looks to have every single available option. From climate control to heated seats and airbags. And it all seems to work. There isn't a speck of rust on the car. The interior is very clean. It has new tires. The headliner is saggy and the speedometer and fuel gauge have failed. Other than that its great. I scored it for $1400.

My wife (now pregnant hence the purchase) has always wanted one, now she has it.

A new starter was put in 2007. There is 700 miles on the most recent oil change- synthetic 5w30. The transmission and rear differential both have fresh synthetic oils in them last September

The following has been done in the last 2000 miles

It has new brakes and rotors all the way around,

new Bilstein shocks on the front,

new BF Goodrich tires, 500 miles

both new fuel pumps (in tank and out of tank)

new hoses,

new motor and transmission mounts and bushings,

new struts to hold up the rear hatch,

new distributor

new radiator

Im sure it needs a T-belt as there is one in the boot. I'm mechanically inclined and will get around to this asap.

thanks for the welcome guys. It seemed to run out pretty well. better than I thought it would for how heavy the beast is. I'm having trouble deciphering why there are 2 seperate forums for the 740 and 760? I cant really seem to see any visual differences. Is it just a trim level difference?

How is the boost controlled on these? Anyone have a writeup on a timing belt? I want to make sure its in good running shape, but after that I will of course mess with it here is my other toy car:

Nice VW. If you neve drove a turbo.....you will love it!

FYI....my 745T weighs in ~3200 with me in her. Th 89 760 turbo should be about the same......

Boost is controlled via wastegate on the turbo. you can set up a MBC to adjust boost up. unless you have the turbo+ system which is attached to the airbox.
I believe you have the garrette T3 turbo on that model....should be good for 16psi but you will need to look into ecu chips or tuning to get past the fuel cut. Though I've heard that there is a cutoff switch under the dash?
Timing belt is not that difficult on the 4 cylinder models...Its been a while since I did mine so I can't remember off hand.

Awsome cars.....and good luck!

Nice deal... And since you know your way around an engine bay, you'll have a lot of fun. You can get a headliner kit from IPDUSA and DIY pretty easily on the wagon. How's the rear end/suspension? This car should have IRS and it's a little more challenging/pricey but not too bad... Also, when you go looking for parts, keep in mind that a 1990 760 is more like a 960 in many respects than a 740... or a 1991 940SE, (it's a Volvo thing).

nice VW! (nice wagon as well) In addition to my 960, I have an 82 Quantum. It doesn't look nearly as nice as your rabbit, but man, it is on of the most fun 4 cylinder manuals I have ever driven.

Do a stage zero on the car first. (stage zero gets the car back to proper spec)
Chips can be bought here (link only works if you have an account) or Here. the site only lists the 740....
But it is based on engine (ex: B230FT) and the management you have (ex: LH2.4), so if you have questions...ask them.

drove it home today. the only thing that seems off, is that it seems to stay in first a little longer than neccesary, and then shifts into 2nd after you let off the gas. kinda odd.
