While repairing my 960 wagon ('95) tail light ***'y, I noticed a hose on top of the passenger interior rear wheel well housing. A black 1/2" (?) hos, coming from the front couples onto a double body black plastic housing and a clear hose exits the ***'y and attaches to a fitting that seems to go behind the right rear bumper cover. WTH is this thing? It has made me curious.

While we are at it, what do that box hide do in the 2nd picture. There is one on each side of rear wells.

Yes, roof drain, although the valve in the middle is odd, not present in 740/940 line.
The box is a vent box, there should be openings to the outside. Why a box like that? Not sure. Earlier models just had slots venting out. Easy to take it apart and see what's inside, probably a filter.

 

The vent helps the air flow through the car. Almost all cars do it now. lol
