1995 850 - Power Steering Rack leaking from top
I did a search for this but didn't find anything obviously useful.
Own a 1995 850. Was in a wreck in it a little over a year ago. The tireod/rack took the brunt of the force. Got the body work done, and replace the drivers side tie-rod.
A few weeks ago, the car started leaking profusely from the top of the rack. (where the steering column mounts on.)
Assuing that there was nothing that could be done for the rack, I pulled another one from a 1996 850 TURBO, and put it into the 1995.. everything bolted up just fine.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, and I notice a big pool of power steering fluid again coming from the same area.
Turns out that the LOWER pressure line's o-ring got tore up during the change out (or it was just old). So I take off the lines and replace o-rings, and hook them back up. (Upper is 5/8th, lower is 3/4th for those of you searching).
Fill the resovoir with new fluid, and crank it up with NO LOAD on it. Stop it, and look...
And it is leaking in teh exact same place as the old rack.. I don't think this is a coincidence. Here's a picture of it for reference.

Anyone have any any advice? Why would two racks have the same problem? Are there o-rings for that? I bought the exended warranty from teh pick and pull, so I can get another one.. but I just find it odd that the exact same problem woudl creep up.
Thanks in advance...

No.. The other car was pristine - no wreck damage. I was wanting to get a salvage titile for it because it was BLACK, and still had the the Turbo on it. (on the back of the engine)
Ok.. so is that seal a common thing to go out after high milegage? Do I need to get a refurb/reman or new one?
Or is that a seal that can be replaced?

I have not replaced that seal myself. Not really all that common but have seen quite a few leak there.
I would get a warranty one from the yard and go from there.
There is also issues with rebuilt ones. I have a customer that I have put 2 rebuilts in already and it is leaking again.

But can you get the seal from volvo? I can fix anything as lomg as I have the parts.
is it a seal that a "shade-treer" can do?
I just don't want to have to yank out two racks again (one from the car that is driving, and then one from the salvage yard away from my air tools.)

$266... thats good to know.. I wont be doing that..
If you got a warranty, go with the yard.. I dont know how your yard is by you but here in Miami everyone I have seen is destroyed by these jack-A*ses that destroy everything just to get a Clip..
Good Luck..
