Default 1995 850 Turbo ABS Question

I recently bought a 1995 850 Turbo for the girlfriend and the time has come for alot of needed maintenance. I am looking intofixing the ABScontroller. What do you think of paying for mine to be refurbed or buying a used one? Anyone have one part number 9401542 laying around for sale? Thanks guys, I am sure you will be seeing my new face around here alot. I have to do serpentine belt, timing belt, PCV system, outer CV boots, etc. When you finally take the girlfriends car to the shop and have a look around its amazing what problems I can find.

Hi Luke,

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, most places deal with only '96 or later ABS module. For '95 and older, you have only 2 options:

- Buy a new/known good used unit.
- Repair it on your own/family friend who's into complex electronics.

For '96 & '97, the problem seems to be poor soldering that crack with age due to vibration & high temp in the engine bay. For '95 and earlier models, it seems either the module itself or brake switch seems to go south.

Here's a general servicing guide. See my 1st & 2nd replies.

Pull your codes from socket A-3 and post them back. Many times it comes down to a dirty reluctance ring or a dirty connection on the wheel sensor on the older units.

I thought that there was a gentleman around who repaired 95 and earlier modules?

Thanks for the info. I pulled the codes from A-3 and got the following.
3-1-1 LH front wheel sensor open or short circuit.
2-1-3 LH rear wheel sensor no signal when moving off
2-1-4 RH rear wheel sensor so signal when moving off.

I have been tinkering with cars for a few years, but never did much more than brakes, struts, transmission, rear axel. etc. so I am learning alot from this Volvo. The car started smoking the other day, so I began reading into the posts here. I also took the car to a local foreign auto mechanic to take a peak before I start replacing everything. I talked to him and then went to work on it myself. I fixed a few pieces of the PCV system, tempo fix until the new PCV arrives, after degreasing the engine compartment. Needless so say the smoking stopped, but know it needs replaced. Next week once the parts arrive I will be replacing the whole PCV system, turbo drain pipe seal kit, upper engine stabilizer bushing, both drive axles, serpantine belt, and timing belt.

"The mechanics remarks were as follows: turbo charger drain tube is leaking, oil leakage from the top of the engine, excessive crankcase pressure, oil trap and related components need replaced. The coolant hoses near the turbo charger are contaminated with oil, check engine and ABS lights are on, Extract and erase the engine DTC's ECM: Catalyst efficiency. Attempt to communicate with ABS controller. No communication is possible. The shift lock is in-operative. Both outer CV boots are torn."

Based on what he said and what I noticed when I looked at the car is where the parts list came from. Is there anything else you think I should replace based on his remarks, or your experience, while I am overhauling the car? I want to make sure I am understanding him right. I made the post about the ABS because of what the mechanic said. I assumed he ment I needed a new ABS controller. Thanksfor the help,
Luke

See if you can find other items in the following thread; I posted a list of items that often need servicing.See my1st & 2nd replies.

https://volvoforums.com/m_48928/tm.htm

Try cleaning the wheel speed sensors (wheels need to be removed) and the pulser teeth with brake cleaner. Also try spraying some electrical contact cleaner in the electrical connectors for those sensors. I would assume that the ECU is likely to be shot.

I hope it is of some use for you.

Thats one long list of parts. I will keep working on it, 1 day at a time. I found a usedECU for $50 so I am going to order that next week and see if that fixes the problem. I figure its used, who knows how good it is, but worth a shot for that price. Thanks, JPN.
Luke

* Also I am a pilot with lots of access to young mechanics/electriciansso I am going to try and get one of the electricians in my squadron to take a look at mine and see if they can fix it.

Hi Luke,

Great, what airplane do you fly?

I would try avionics shop specialist rather than generic A&P technician. While I was in school, only about 3% (or less) of all guys/gals really knew electrical & electronic systems concepts. And I wouldfind one with FCC GROL (General Radiotelephone Operator License) + Ship Radar Endorsement rating certificate.

For '96 & '97, the problem seems to be in poor soldering that develop cracks due to age, high temp & vibration. For '95 & earlier models, the problem seems to be in the brake lamp switch and something else that I can't recall at the moment, but ATE's ABS ECU seems skeptical.

Default RE: 1995 850 Turbo ABS Question

I fly the EA6B prowler, 4 seat jet. I pulled all 4 wheel sensors out so if anyone would like my advice it is, it sucks. If they havent been removed in 13 years, its a long process. The front two came out relatively easy. just keep wiggling the sensor and work it out. They were covered in brake dust, etc. I cleaned them with brake cleaner, and used a wire brush to scrub all around where the sensors sit. I know directions for geting to the wiring harness generally say take out the airbox, and battery, but I found it easier going behind the rotor and following the wire up. Also 1 of the bolts holding the sensor in snapped, something fun always happens to me. So I spent an hour drilling the bolt out. The rear two sensors are way harder to get out if you try to get them out by simply removing the 10mm nut holding the sensor in and working it out from just the inside of the rotor. It would be way easier, I assume anyway, if you pull the caliper and rotor off. You could then work the sensors out from both front and back. Take the extra time and take the caliper and rotor off. After I cleaned the sensors and erased the codes for the ABS, the ABS light went out, but I can tell the ABS still is not working. I am assuming a new ECU should tell me if thats the problem so I am going to try and borrow one before I buy one, and find a reliable lectrician like you said. Thanks for the info,
Luke

Hi Luke,

That is a nice jet with many anti-stall devices on the wings.

I think snapping bolt happens to all of us. And if there are multiple of them, it is usually the last one that snaps.

I hope another ECU can resolve the problem.
