Is the car up to date with tune-up? Any cracked vacuum hoses, loose or corroded electrical connections? Your signs are typical of fuel pump or fuel pump relay, but you need to get the obvious ones out of the way first.

Agree w/Henry. When it dies, does it stay "dead" long enough to do any troubleshooting?

Next time it dies, pop the hood (have a rag handy) and see if the fuel rail has any pressure in it by slightly depressing the shrader valve for a sec.

+1 With the above 2 post. Also, have your battery checked ASAP. Sometimes a voltage drop can cause the car to stall.

I bough the car 4 months ago but since it died the first time I've been afraid to used it. Since our Oklahoma winter was so bad I didn't drive the car for 3 months (it was under snow) Now that I am using it is a different story. No tune up or battery check but will be the first thing I do this week. The battery dies after two (2) days of no used. Ok guys, I will do as you guys are suggesting. Will keep you posted

Ok guys, check the gas pump and is in good working order. Replace the spark plugs that where worn out and the oil cooler hoses that where brittle, did a test drive up and down a hill also on the highway runs like a champ but have not been able to find out why it died and if will do it again, I will replace the ignition coil ($135) but is too expensive for now. Any other suggestions?

What makes you suspect the ignition coil?

Well, after it run perfectly all day, my wife took the car and it died on her twice while driving, the fuel pump is putting out 50psi so is good and strong, I though I replace the coil because is as old as the car and when it dies is like everything goes out but it start right away. Do you think it could be something else. I did have the pump check and the mech says is good.

Run a search in this forum for "fuel pump relay" and follow those instructions.

Members here might be more helpful to you if questions in previous posts are answered (vacuum, electrical, etc.).

After these episodes, you might have misfire and other codes. Those might also be helpful.

Well gents
I took blackbrick’s and arzy's advice on the tread “The infamous Volvo 850 "My car dies while driving but starts no problem"
and replace the two capacitors as per the instructions on mathew’s Volvo http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/for...pic.php?t=9681 took the car for a spin and so far no problems although is too early to tell. I feel confident that this will work. The capacitors where $.83 and $.45 cents at a electronics store here in town. I found the exact match so now only time will tell. I will keep you guys posted.

My daughter's '95 850 (non-turbo) is having similar symptoms. Any further thoughts would be most helpful.

When the car dies, do the lights on the dash go out or do they all light up?

Default car dies

had a similar situation with my 1994 850

this is an old OBDI count the lights deal - turned out to be Cam Position sensor.

Symptoms were that enging e does not studder or cough or run rough - it just stops, but after I pull over starts as if nothing happened.

All other issues have resulted in rough running MAF, Vac elbows, even the FP relay (which I just fused and it is now a connector rather than a relay)

Have heard of cam pos sensor not showing under Autozone OBDII scan, but showing at a shop scan. Hope ths helps
